(Sports Network) – Recent first-round pick Alex White faces the Seattle
Mariners for the first time in his brief big-league career tonight when the
Colorado Rockies begin a three-game interleague series at Coors Field.

White, the 15th overall pick of the 2009 draft by the Cleveland Indians, made
three starts in the American League last season before heading to the Rockies
in the trade that sent Ubaldo Jimenez to the American League.

He finished the season with a 2-4 mark in seven starts with Colorado and has
opened 2012 with two losses in two starts since an early May call-up from
Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he was 1-3 with a 2.92 earned run average.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound North Carolina native was an 11-5 loser to the Dodgers
in Los Angeles in his most recent start after allowing six runs on five hits
in 4 1/3 innings.

In 10 2/3 big-league innings this month, he’s allowed 11 hits and eight runs.

Seattle counters with right-handed veteran Kevin Millwood, who debuted in the
majors with the Atlanta Braves the year White turned nine.

He’s gone on to make 422 starts in 430 appearances with six more teams since,
including a nine-start stint with the Rockies last season in which he was 4-3
with a 3.98 ERA across 54 1/3 innings.

He signed a one-year deal with the Mariners worth $1 million on Jan. 24 and
immediately lost his first four decisions in his initial six starts before
breaking through with a 6-2 defeat of the New York Yankees on May 13.

In that start, his fourth on the road this spring, he gave up a single run on
three hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.

The Mariners are 2-5 in Millwood’s seven starts this year and he is 8-3
lifetime against the Rockies with a 3.30 ERA in 87 1/3 innings.

On Thursday in Cleveland, Carlos Santana singled home the winning run in
bottom of the 11th inning, and the Indians rallied past the Mariners, 6-5, in
the finale of a two-game set at Progressive Field.

The Mariners had broken a 4-4 tie in the top of the 11th against Joe Smith
(4-1) when Michael Saunders doubled home Dustin Ackley.

But Brandon League’s (0-3) poor control sparked a another comeback for the
Indians, who had erased a 4-1 deficit on Jose Lopez’s two-out, three-run homer
in the eighth.

League walked two of the first three batters he faced, and an Asdrubal Cabrera
single plated Lopez with the tying run. After League walked pinch-hitter Aaron
Cunningham to load the bases, Santana won the game with a base hit to center
field.

“My control was just absolutely unacceptable today,” League said. “I don’t
remember the last time I walked three guys in 1/3 of an inning.”

In Colorado, Justin Upton’s two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted the
Arizona Diamondbacks over the Rockies, 9-7, in the final game of a brief two-
game series.

Upton, who was a career 0-for-6 with five strikeouts against Rafael Betancourt
prior to his home run, fell behind 1-2 with two outs. But Betancourt’s cutter
caught just enough of the plate and Upton drove the ball deep into the seats
in right-center.

Gerrardo Parra reached two hitters earlier with a double.

J.J. Putz loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but was
able to strike out Alex White before getting Ramon Hernandez to ground into a
game-ending double play.

Brad Ziegler (2-1) earned the win after recording the final out of the eighth.

The D-backs used a four-run eighth to take a 7-4 lead. Parra walked, moved to
second on a wild pitch then scored when Willie Bloomquist singled to right.
Bloomquist then stole second before scoring when Jason Kubel also singled to
right to put Arizona up 5-4.

Esmil Rodgers entered the game in relief for Colorado and immediately gave up
a pair RBI singles to Paul Goldschmidt and Ryan Roberts.

But the Rockies answered with three runs in the eighth to tie the game. David
Hernandez, who entered in relief, loaded the bases with two outs. Hernandez
then walked in a run before pinch-hitter Michael Cuddyer reached on an error,
roping a grounder that hopped off Roberts’ glove and over his shoulder,
allowing another run to score.

Hernandez walked Marco Scutaro to plate the Rockies’ third run of the inning
before Ziegler was brought in and recorded the final out courtesy of Upton’s
sliding catch in right.

The Mariners are 13-12 in 25 interleague meetings with Colorado, including a
4-7 mark at Coors Field.

May 18, 2012 – Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Alex White will be looking for his first victory of the season on Friday night when the Seattle Mariners visit Coors Field. The series kicks off interleague play for both teams in 2012 under baseball’s new scheduling format.

White (0-2, 6.75 ERA), who was called up on May 8 to face San Diego, has had mixed results in his first two outings of the season. Against the San Diego Padres in his season debut, White gave up just two runs over 6.1 innings but he was docked with the loss as Colorado could muster just one run.

His second start of the season didn’t go nearly as well, with White giving up six runs on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’ll be interesting to see how long White’s leash is against the Mariners.

Opposing White will be Kevin Millwood (1-4, 5.09 ERA), who pitched for the Rockies in 2011. He just had his best start of the season, throwing seven innings of one-run ball against the New York Yankees for his first win.

The Colorado Rockies are dealing with an epidemic of walks, which, not surprisingly, has been very costly in two recent losses and has contributed to some very shoddy work recently by the bullpen. The Rockies issued 10 walks, one intentional, Sunday at Los Angeles and lost 11-5. Seven of those 10 walks were issued by relievers and five ended up scoring. On Tuesday at San Francisco, the Rockies managed to blow a save and win 5-4, despite issuing another 10 walks (one intentional). The bullpen was responsible for six walks, although just one of the 10 scored. Seeking a sweep of their two-game series with the Diamondbacks, the Rockies lost 9-7 on Thursday when closer Rafael Betancourt yielded a two-run homer with two out in the ninth. Rockies pitchers issued nine walks (one intentional), and four ended up scoring. Starter Juan Nicasio walked five and threw two wild pitches in 4 2/3 innings, departing after throwing 106 pitches, with just 57 strikes. He took a line drive on the right hip — a ball hit by Willie Bloomquist, the game’s second batter — and had trouble pushing off after that. Nicasio said he couldn’t help but think of Aug. 5 at Coors Field when he was struck on the right temple with a line drive and suffered a fractured skull and a broken C1 vertebrae. “You throw 100-something pitches in four innings, it’s bad,” Nicasio said. With Nicasio unable to make it through the five innings necessary to qualify for a win and leaving the game with a 3-1 lead, manager Jim Tracy had to go to the bullpen. He ended up using six relievers in a game the Rockies led 3-0 and 4-1 before giving up eight runs in the final four innings. After Betancourt gave up Upton’s homer, the Rockies loaded the bases with no outs against closer J.J. Putz but didn’t score when pitcher Alex White, forced to pinch hit, struck out and Ramon Hernandez grounded into a double play. After Nicasio left, Josh Outman struck out three in his one inning, but not before giving up a hit and a walk. Matt Belisle gave up four hits, a walk and a run in one inning. Josh Roenicke retired the one batter he faced, but Rex Brothers allowed two hits, two walks (one intentional) and four runs while retiring just two of the six batters he faced. Esmil Rogers, coming off a perfect 11-pitch, 11-strike inning Wednesday, gave up two run-scoring singles before putting an end to a four-run eighth. “We can’t pitch any worse than that,” Tracy said. In particular, Outman, Belisle and Brothers are struggling — and Rogers may be beyond that point. Outman, activated Saturday after beginning the season on the disabled list with a right oblique strain, has allowed three hits, three walks and five runs in two innings over three appearances. In Belisle’s past three appearances, he has a blown save and has yielded eight hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings, with one walk and one strikeout. In those games, Belisle has inherited four runners and three have scored. Brothers seemed to turn the corner Monday at San Francisco when he walked the bases loaded in the eighth but escaped by striking out the next batter he faced. Brothers really hasn’t been right since he made a scoreless appearance with two strikeouts in the season opener April 6. In his past nine games, Brothers has pitched 5 1/3 innings with a blown save while allowing nine hits, seven runs and seven walks with seven strikeouts. Then there’s Rogers, who made a deceptive second straight scoreless appearance. In his past six games, Rogers has a loss, a blown save and has allowed nine hits and nine runs in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. During that span, three of his five inherited runners have scored.

De La Rosa allowed one run in four innings and received a no-decision as the Drillers lost 2-1 to Northwest Arkansas before 5,614 fans at ONEOK Field.

The Naturals (23-17), who snapped a 1-all tie on Eric Duncan’s RBI single in the sixth inning, became the first visiting team to sweep a four-game series in ONEOK Field’s three-season history. Tulsa (24-16) had been sweet in a pair of three-game series previously.

Tulsa’s lead in the North Division first-half race is down to one game over the Naturals after it had been seven on May 4. Before this series, the Drillers had been 15-3 at home and Naturals were 3-11 on the road.

It was a good night for De La Rosa, however. De La Rosa allowed three hits, walked three and struck out four in his second rehab start for Tulsa and fourth overall in his comeback from Tommy John-elbow surgery last July. De La Rosa lasted only one inning and gave up four runs last Saturday for Tulsa before departing with some forearm tightness.

“It was way better than last time,” said De La Rosa, who has a 54-49 major league record. “I was a little tired in the last inning, I hadn’t thrown more than 50 pitches (in a game this spring). I feel very good. Today, my arm feels much better.”

De La Rosa finished with 73 pitches, including 43 for strikes. His fastball was primarily in the 88-89 mph range but he twice reached 92 mph, just below his normal velocity.

“It’s going to get better and I’ll get stronger and get my velocity sooner or later,” De La Rosa said.

The past year has gone by slowly for De La Rosa as the Rockies’ starting rotation has struggled.

“One year is too much. No one deserves to be out one year,” De La Rosa said. “It’s hard. I’m going to be back and try to help my team win as many games as I can. They want to make sure I’m OK and I’ve got to keep working on some things.”

De La Rosa allowed a first-inning run as Yem Prades lined a leadoff double and scored on Sharlon Schoop’s bloop single. De La Rosa finished with a 1-2-3 fourth inning.

“The big thing is he got through it healthy and didn’t have the issues he had in that first start so that’s a positive,” Drillers manager Duane Espy said. “He pitched down a lot better and his changeup was very effective. I think it was a step in the right direction.”

De La Rosa’s final two rehab starts are scheduled to be for Triple-A Colorado Springs.

He is slated to rejoin the Rockies on June 2.

Naturals lefty Noel Arguelles (2-3) made it through six innings on 73 pitches as he scattered seven hits. Tulsa’s only run came on Tim Torres’ third-inning RBI single. Arguelles is a Cuban defector who received a $6.9 major league contract when he signed with Kansas City in 2009.

The Naturals’ tiebreaking run came off Cory Riordan (2-1) in a sixth inning that included two runners picked off from scoring position by catcher Jose Gonzalez. In the bottom of the sixth, Tulsa loaded the bases with no outs, but did not score as Angelys Nina lined into an inning-ending double play. The Drillers didn’t threaten again.

DENVER Justin Upton hit a two-out, two-run homer off closer Rafael Betancourt in the ninth inning to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 9-7 on Thursday in a game that was briefly delayed by a swarm of bees.

Upton sent a 93-mph fastball from Betancourt (1-1) over the right field fence for his first homer in two weeks.

Willie Bloomquist and Ryan Roberts also drove in two runs apiece as the Diamondbacks won for the third time in 12 contests.

J.J. Putz escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth by getting Ramon Hernandez to hit into a game-ending 5-4-3 double-play for his seventh save in nine chances.

The buzz surrounding this game, though, centred on the bees that invaded the stadium, taking over a camera bay next to the Rockies’ dugout in the fifth inning. They remained stuck to a railing until a beekeeper arrived an inning later to vacuum up the bees and relocate them.

Lately, Coors Field has resembled “Wild Kingdom,” with a squirrel scampering into the outfield grass the night before.

Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run homer off starter Trevor Cahill and Jordan Pacheco added a solo shot to help stake the Rockies to an early 4-1 lead.

But it wouldn’t last. Bloomquist ignited a four-run eighth with an RBI single off Rex Brothers. Jason Kubel, Paul Goldschmidt and Roberts also added run-scoring singles.

The three-run cushion wouldn’t be enough as David Hernandez was roughed up in the eighth. He loaded the bases and then walked Dexter Fowler to bring in a run. Michael Cuddyer sent a chopper to Roberts, who booted the grounder to allow another run to score.

With the bases still full, Marco Scutaro drew another walk to tie the game at 7.

Brad Ziegler (2-1) relieved Hernandez and promptly gave up a sinking liner to pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario. But Upton made a sliding catch in right to quell the threat.

Gerardo Parra had a one-out double in the ninth and stole third. After Betancourt struck out Bloomquist, Upton drilled his fourth homer of the season.

Putz started out the ninth in rocky fashion, giving up singles to Carlos Gonzalez, Tulowitzki and Todd Helton. The Rockies sent pitcher Alex White to the plate to pinch hit for Betancourt and he took a called third strike on a 3-2 count.

Then, Hernandez hit a weak grounder to Roberts to end the threat.

Rockies starter Juan Nicasio had a scare in the first inning when Bloomquist sent a liner straight at him. Nicasio turned his back just in time and was struck on the right thigh.

The play was eerily reminiscent of the line drive that hit Nicasio in the right temple last August, when he suffered a fractured skull along with a neck injury. Doctors had to perform emergency surgery to insert pins into the cracked C-1 vertebra and attach a small metal plate to the back of his neck.

Nicasio made a remarkable recovery to become one of the Rockies’ most reliable pitchers this season.

Soon after being hit, manager Jim Tracy and trainer Keith Dugger popped out of the dugout to check on him. Nicasio threw a few warmup pitches to test the leg, before motioning he was all right.

But he appeared rattled and walked the next two batters. Nicasio worked his way out of the jam without any damage.

The Rockies got off to a quick start in the first as Tulowitzki lined a two-run shot to left. It was his first homer since April 27.

Relying on a 95-mph four-seam fastball, Nicasio retired nine straight at one point, before running out of steam and allowing a walk to Aaron Hill to start the fifth.

This may have played a role: Shortly after Nicasio took the mound for the fifth, the game was momentarily halted by bees that just appeared out of nowhere.

Nicasio gave up one run in 4 2-3 innings. He also struck out seven, but was wild as well, walking five.

NOTES: Cahill surrendered four runs and five hits in five innings. … Diamondbacks OF Chris Young (shoulder) hit a grand slam for Class A Visalia on Wednesday. He will now move on to Triple-A Reno for his rehab assignment. … The Diamondbacks kick off interleague play with a visit to Kansas City on Friday night. They are 9-3 at Kauffman Stadium. … Rockies LHP Jorge De La Rosa (shoulder) was scheduled to start for Double-A Tulsa on Thursday night. … The Rockies host the Seattle Mariners on Friday night, with White (0-2) facing RHP Kevin Millwood (1-4), who spent last season with Colorado. … The Rockies issued nine walks against Arizona on Thursday.

The Colorado Rockies have been giving up runs at an alarming rate at home, but a visit from the Seattle Mariners could provide some relief.

The Rockies open a three-game interleague series Friday night against the Mariners, who have one of baseball’s most anemic offenses.

Coors Field has never been the most pitcher-friendly ballpark, but it’s been especially frustrating for the home team in 2012. Colorado fell to 9-11 there with a 9-7 loss to Arizona on Thursday – the fifth time in the last seven home games it allowed at least seven runs.

The Rockies (15-22) have a 5.67 ERA at home – worst in the majors. In the last 11 in Denver, it’s at 6.29.

It was the bullpen that struggled Thursday, although starter Juan Nicasio failed to make it out of the fifth inning. Rex Brothers gave up four runs in the eighth and Justin Upton hit a two-out, two-run homer off closer Rafael Betancourt in the ninth.

The Rockies failed to win their third straight, which would have matched their longest winning streak of the season.

Colorado’s pitching staff could have an easier time against the Mariners (16-24), who have dropped four straight and are 1-6 on a 10-game road trip.

They blew two late leads in a 6-5, 11-inning loss to the Indians on Thursday. Steve Delabar gave up three runs in the eighth, and after Michael Saunders doubled home a run in the top of the 11th to put Seattle ahead, Brandon League gave up two in the bottom of the inning after issuing three walks and a wild pitch.

“We gave them that game,” manager Eric Wedge said. “Walks killed us early and walks killed us late. I liked the way we battled back after they tied the score the first time, but then we blew it again.”

The defeat dropped Seattle to 1-12 away from home since April 28, with the team batting .216 and averaging 2.4 runs during that stretch.

The Mariners will send Kevin Millwood (1-4, 5.09 ERA) to the mound in the opener as he faces one of his former teams. The right-hander signed late last season with Colorado after being released by Boston and made nine starts, going 4-3 with a 3.98 ERA.

After struggling through his first six starts with Seattle, he allowed one run and three hits in seven innings of a 6-2 victory over the Yankees on Sunday for his first win.

“I thought he was outstanding today,” Wedge said. ”He did a great job with his secondary stuff.”

Millwood is 8-3 with a 3.30 ERA against the Rockies, last facing them in 2005 while with Cleveland, but several Rockies have hit well off him. Michael Cuddyer is 12 for 28 (.429) with two homers and four doubles against Millwood while Jason Giambi has homered three times among his eight hits in 19 at-bats.

Colorado counters with Alex White (0-2, 6.75).

After going 6 1-3 innings in his season debut May 8, White stumbled against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, allowing six runs in 4 1-3 innings of an 11-5 loss.

This will be his first time facing the Mariners.

The Rockies have won four straight against Seattle, sweeping a three-game home series in 2009.

Gotta run!.

Jordan Pacheco is going to get more playing time at third base and maybe a chance to solidify a position that has been an offensive black hole for the Colorado Rockies. Chris Nelson, who has made 20 starts at third base, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left wrist inflammation, retroactive to Tuesday. Jonathan Herrera has made nine starts at third base but is viewed as more of a utility type — he also has made seven starts at second base. Pacheco made his seventh start at third base Wednesday and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI as the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 6-1. Pacheco began the year on the Rockies’ bench but was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on April 15 so he could play third base regularly and become more instinctive at the position. He was recalled May 5 and, after starting May 7-8, didn’t start again until Tuesday at San Francisco. The Rockies could use a lift at third base. They entered Wednesday with their third basemen hitting .222, which is 12th in the National League, with one homer (tied for 14th) and 10 RBI (tied for 14th). Rockies third basemen had a .298 on-base percentage (10th), a .333 slugging percentage (14th) and a .631 OPS (13th). Pacheco began his career as a second baseman in 2007 and was moved to catcher after spring training 2008. The Rockies thought his leadership skills would play well at catcher and didn’t think he profiled power-wise to play third base. He began playing the position in late August at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he had spent most of the season catching. The Rockies called him up in September. Herrera figures to get some time at third base, too. But Pacheco has started the past two games at the position and has hit the ball well (3-for-7). He has a chance to earn the bulk of the playing time. He doesn’t figure to hit for a lot of power, but Pacheco has shown he can make steady contact and be a gap-to-gap hitter who rarely strikes out. If Pacheco can be average at third base, he should give the Rockies some much-needed offense at the position.

That’s all for today.

Gregor Blanco did the improbable in the sixth inning of a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies, hitting a home run deep into the right-field seats at AT&T Park. It was just the third major league homer for Blanco and first in 172 at-bats.

He was back to his familiar tricks in the eighth inning while scoring what proved to be the winning run. Blanco led off the bottom of the eighth with an infield single and alertly took third when Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario made a poor throw on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Joaquin Arias.

Blanco scored the go-ahead run two batters later on Buster Posey’s single to center field. Brett Pill’s single to left brought Arias home.

The two-run cushion would be needed.

Arias’ error at third base allowed a run to score in the top of the ninth, but with the bases loaded, Arias made a slick play on a slow roller to end the game.

The save was Santiago Casilla’s eighth in nine chances since Brian Wilson had season-ending elbow surgery. The Giants improved to 15-0 when leading after the eighth inning.

Rockies rookie Christian Friedrich was cruising along until Blanco led off the bottom of the sixth with his solo blast.

The homer injected some life into a Giants offense that struck out seven times in the first three innings and managed to get just two balls out of the infield in the first five innings.

Posey hit a two-out single later in the sixth and went to third on Angel

Pagan’s double, but Pill struck out to end the threat. The Giants also left two runners on in the fourth and fifth innings, but Ryan Vogelsong was able to keep them in the game.

Vogelsong wasn’t particularly sharp, walking five and going to a full count to seven of the first 14 Rockies hitters. But he was resilient, striking out Todd Helton to strand two runners in the first and getting Michael Cuddyer to fly out to deep center to leave the bases loaded in the third.

Rosario jumped on one of the few mistakes inside the strike zone, hitting a deep homer to left field in the fourth. Vogelsong retired the next 12 hitters he faced to reach the seven-inning mark for the third consecutive start. He has allowed just one run in each of those starts and lowered his ERA to 2.66.

A new position didn’t bring any new luck for Freddy Sanchez.

Sanchez switched from second base to third base this month in an effort to kick-start his rehab from shoulder surgery, but his lower back flared up over the weekend. Sanchez, who has been at the Giants’ facility in Arizona, will have an MRI exam to determine the extent of the latest injury.

Manager Bruce Bochy saw Sanchez play Friday before the opener of a three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He said the back was bothering Sanchez on Friday and got worse over the weekend.

“He’s had another minor setback,” Bochy said Monday. “He’s at the point where he can’t do anything because of his back.”

Sanchez’s back briefly flared up during spring training, and he has dealt with continued shoulder problems throughout the season. Sanchez played three games for the Single-A San Jose Giants in late April but was sent back to extended spring training after feeling shoulder pain.

That was when he asked to switch positions, in part because the throws from third base are less complicated than the ones from second base.

Sanchez had surgery last August and has not played defense in a game since June 10, when he dislocated his right shoulder while making a diving stop on a ground ball.

Pablo Sandoval (left hamate fracture) played catch before Monday’s game and also took one-handed swings. Sandoval was scheduled to have his stitches removed Monday night, but Bochy said it’s too early to say Sandoval is ahead of schedule in his rehab from surgery.

Aubrey Huff has not started since being activated May 7, but Bochy said Huff is getting closer to earning a start. Huff spent two weeks on the disabled list as he dealt with an episode of anxiety. He returned at the beginning of last week’s trip.

TUESDAY’S GAME
Colorado (Jeremy Guthrie 2-1) at Giants (Tim Lincecum 2-3), 7:15 p.m. CSNBA

No defense exists. No explanation will suffice. The Rockies must option Jhoulys Chacin to the minors. He has left them no choice. This isn’t a demotion. It’s an act of mercy.

Chacin was given the ball Tuesday night and asked to make a statement. His performance screamed for a SuperShuttle ticket to Triple-A Colorado Springs, switching spots with right-hander Alex White, after he allowed a career-high seven earned runs in a 7-6 loss to the Dodgers at Coors Field.

Where adjectives fail, numbers succeed. Chacin has three victories in his past 21 starts dating to last season. He’s 3-13 with a 5.14 ERA during that span. This is not an aberration, a bad night, a strike-squeezing ump. Chacin needs to leave so he can return as himself. The Braves are pursuing a similar track with former ace Jair Jurrjens. It’s jarring, but necessary.

Everything set up for Chacin to put his foot down Tuesday. Instead, he put his foot firmly out the door in the loss to the Dodgers.

There was no driving rain, as in his last start at Coors Field. No sun burning the retina of his left fielder, like his last outing at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

This was a postcard-perfect night. And Chacin clumsily spilled Ragu all over the mound. Chacin allowed a leadoff homer to shortstop Dee Gordon (he has one more than Albert Pujols, for those counting at home). Moments later Andre Ethier rifled a shot over the fence, leaving the Rockies in a 4-0 hole before the first out had been recorded.

The Rockies battled back from the 7-0 hole to get the tying run at third in the ninth but fell short, the hole Chacin put them in too big to dig out from. Part of the problem is Chacin’s weight. Or management’s unhappiness with his offseason conditioning, which, by all accounts wasn’t an issue from the moment he arrived in spring training. This is about performance. Chacin isn’t giving the Rockies a chance to win, a demoralizing slide that is compounded by struggling rookie Drew

Pomeranz following him in the rotation.

He has forced the Rockies to call up White, who pitched late Tuesday night for the Sky Sox. White owns a 2.70 ERA and, while awful during his big-league cameo last year, he has demonstrated a better sinker and changeup over the last month.

At this point, the Rockies can farm out Chacin or pay ransom to the person that kidnapped the right-hander because this Chacin bears no resemblance to the promising rookie in 2010 and the pitcher who anchored the rotation for 10 weeks last season.

He is naked on the mound, left with no weapons. Once armed with a late-sinking 93 mph fastball, he consistently sits at 89 mph, and the pitch lacks finish. His changeup is terrific, but hitters eliminate it because he’s constantly behind in the count. His slider is no different. They stick their nose up at the pitch. It still breaks, but is typically so far off the plate hitters can check their swings.

There was a reason that the Rockies didn’t give Chacin a long-term contract last winter. They were concerned about how he finished last season. The free fall began when he experienced forearm tightness in Chicago on June 27. Until that point he was bucking for an all-star berth, owning an 8-4 record with a 2.71 ERA. Spring training brought biceps tendinitis and a finger blister, both of which were used to rationalize his lack of fastball velocity.

He might not be hurt. But he’s not right. His pitches have gone from electric to acoustic. Chacin previously owned the Dodgers at Coors Field, having shut them out over 15 consecutive innings.

Tuesday, one of the biggest rounds of applause came when Rockies manager Jim Tracy removed Chacin.

His next start will be against a California team. For his sake, it needs to be versus Fresno, not in San Diego.

Apr 23, 2012 – The Colorado Rockies are set for a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates to start the new week, but there are questions about whether Monday’s game will even take place. The weather forecast calls for sub-40-degree weather, as well as snow.

Should the game on Monday proceed as planned, the Rockies will have Jamie Moyer (1-2, 2.55 ERA) on the mound. Moyer, as we recall, became the oldest pitcher to win a major league game when he defeated the San Diego Padres, 5-3, last Tuesday. He held the Padres to two unearned runs on six hits over seven innings. He used just 87 pitches that time, having thrown 181 pitches over the 10.2 innings of his first two starts.

Opposing him will be Kevin Correia, who enters the game with a 1-0 record and a 1.50 ERA in two starts. In his second year with the Pirates, Correia is still a familiar face to the Rockies after a combined eight year with the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres. He’s put up similar lines in each start so far: one run allowed over six innings. He has a 3-5 career record with a 4.57 ERA in 30 games (12 starts).

MILWAUKEE — So this is why the Rockies traded pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom to the Orioles for Jeremy Guthrie.

Guthrie was at his best Sunday at Miller Park in the Rockies’ 4-1 victory over the Brewers. With his sinker diving at the plate, he allowed one run and three hits in seven innings.

“I had more action with my two-seam fastball and I was able to use it more effectively and get some quick outs,” Guthrie said.

He has pitched seven innings in three of his four starts this year, but Sunday was by far his best performance.

Guthrie (2-1) pulled off a high-wire act in the sixth inning and came away unscathed. Aramis Ramirez hit a two-out double to right and Corey Hart walked. Brewers first baseman Mat Gamel stepped up and crushed a ball to deep left-center, but Tyler Colvin hauled it in at the base of the wall.

Colvin at No. 2. Colvin made a start in center and hit in the No. 2 slot, replacing Dexter Fowler, who was given a rest day.

Colvin has limited experience — and has enjoyed limited success — batting second in the order. But manager Jim Tracy said Colvin retooled his swing during the winter and can handle the role.

“He handles the bat extremely well,” Tracy said. “Tyler Colvin is a guy that you can put runners in motion and he’s going to put a good swing on and put the ball in play. We have played hit-and-run with him already during the regular season. I tested him during spring training to see if he was going to be able to do that.”

Colvin entered Sunday’s game with 59 career at-bats in the No. 2 hole and was hitting only .136 with a .164 on-base percentage. He went 1-for-5.

More on Moyer. TBS baseball analyst John Smoltz had this to say Sunday about 49-year-old Rockies pitcher Jamie Moyer: “He’s doing it in rarified air and that to me is more impressive than his age. To do it in Colorado is something. I don’t think he came back to do it just this year. … I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back again next year.”

Footnotes. Sunday’s game was Tracy’s 800th win as a major-league manager. With the Rockies, he is 238-217. … Rafael Betancourt is 5-for-5 in save opportunities. … Jason Giambi had his first RBI of the season, driving in Colvin in the first inning.

MILWAUKEE -- Back in December, five days before Christmas, the Rockies signed free-agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a three-year, $31.5 million deal.

MILWAUKEE — Back in December, five days before Christmas, the Rockies signed free-agent outfielder Michael Cuddyer to a three-year, $31.5 million deal.

That’s a big chunk of money, and eyebrows raised around major league front offices, but general manager Dan O’Dowd was radiant.

“For us, quite honestly, we thought it was a perfect fit,” O’Dowd said. “He plays for a bigger purpose, and he gets ‘team.’ We’re going to need that here, and it’s a natural to him. He’s going to make our team better, and he’s going to make our organization better.”

The former Twins star has not disappointed.

In the eighth inning Sunday, Cuddyer rocketed a two-run double to the gap in left-center field off reliever Francisco Rodriguez, driving in Troy Tulowitzki and Jason Giambi and lifting Colorado to a 4-1 victory over the Brewers.

Cuddyer’s double — and a gutsy eighth-inning stop by reliever Matt Belisle — put starter Jeremy Guthrie in the winner’s circle. In Guthrie’s best outing as a Rockie, the right-hander allowed just onerun and three hits over seven innings.

“We got the Michael Cuddyer I was expecting — a great player,” veteran Jason Giambi said. “I watched him for years when he was with Minnesota. I think he was one of those hidden jewels, and I’m surprised more teams didn’t go hard after him. He’s a great baseball player.”

Friday night, hobbled by a bruised big toe, Cuddyer came off the bench in the ninth and delivered a pinch-hit, game-winning single in Colorado’s 4-3 victory.

Cuddyer doesn’t run away from big moments. He wraps his arms around them.

“Who doesn’t like to come in with a man in scoring position in a 1-1 game?” Cuddyer said after Sunday’s game. “I mean, the worst that can happen is you fail. It happens a lot in baseball, so you have to relish those opportunities.”

Cuddyer is hitting .345 and leads the Rockies with 11 RBIs. He’s hitting .500 (8-for-16) with runners in scoring position.

Taking a series from the Brewers at Miller Park was huge for the Rockies, especially considering the Brewers were a major league best 54-27 on their home field last season. And, as Cuddyer noted, the Rockies’ two wins came off two premier relievers. His hit Friday night came off closer John Axford. Sunday’s hit came off Rodriguez, who is essentially closer 1A.

“To be able to get two wins off of pitchers of that caliber, it’s huge for our confidence,” Cuddyer said.

Cuddyer’s ability to deliver when it matters, combined by the pitching performances of Guthrie and Belisle, has manager Jim Tracy believing the Rockies are in a good place as they head to Pittsburgh for the second leg of their road trip.

“I don’t know how many times last year we were in a situation like this with an opportunity to win a series and we weren’t able to do it,” Tracy said. “In games like today, you need a big at-bat and you need to make big pitches.”

Notable

Tyler Colvin made a start in center and hit in the No. 2 slot Sunday, replacing Dexter Fowler, who was given a rest day. Colvin has limited experience — and has enjoyed limited success — batting second in the order. But manager Jim Tracy said Colvin retooled his swing during the winter and can handle the role. … TBS baseball analyst John Smoltz had this to say Sunday about 49-year-old Rockies pitcher Jamie Moyer: “He’s doing it in rarified air and that to me is more impressive than his age. To do it in Colorado is something. I don’t think he came back to do it just this year. … I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back again next year.” … Sunday’s game was Tracy’s 800th win as a major league manager. With the Rockies, he is 238-217. … Rafael Betancourt is 5-for-5 in save opportunities this season. … Jason Giambi had his first RBI of the season, driving in Colvin in the first inning.

I have a new favorite Colorado Rockies player, and he’s the new guy in town. Michael Cuddyer was brought to Denver via trade from the Minnesota Twins over the spring, and he’s come ready to play. Through 13 games, Cuddyer is batting .383 with 2 home runs, seven doubles, and nine RBIs. He’s also leading the team in hustle.

In watching virtually every game the Rockies have played this season, Cuddyer’s effort stands out from his teammates. He stretches singles into doubles; he dives for balls in the outfield. No, he doesn’t get to all of those line drives. His 33-year-old body isn’t as fast or athletic as center fielder Dexter Fowler. As a fan I appreciate Cuddyer’s diving attempts to make a play. I’ve seen Fowler drop a routine fly ball at a game last week, and last night I watched Carlos Rodriguez in left field fail to dive for a ball that he probably should have caught (resulting in an inside-the-park home run).

I’m very impressed with Cuddyer so far, and very happy that the Rockies traded for him. It was a move that was criticized by a lot of my friends (and local sports reporters) when it happened. They thought the Rockies overpaid for him with a three-year, $31.5 million deal in December. No one is saying he’s overpaid now. Without Cuddyer, the Rockies aren’t at 7-6 for the season and are looking at a very difficult 2012.

Cuddyer’s fielding has been solid, but it’s at the plate that he’s truly shown his worth. He’s leading the team in hitting and giving manager Jim Tracy reason to move him around in the lineup. Personally I think Cuddyer should be batting third or fifth right now. He’s way outhitting Carlos Gonzalez and Todd Helton right now, and the Rockies could be more effective if he were batting next to Troy Tulowitzki.

Yes, I know that the season is young and Cuddyer might not hold up over the course of this long season. He’s already gotten hurt when he fouled a ball off his foot a few nights ago. Don’t be suprised if we see Cuddyer start to take more games at first base in relief of Helton to save his body. Cuddyer’s bat is making it difficult to allow him to sit and rest, but the Rockies need to make sure he doesn’t wear himself out too fast this season.

I’m not one of those Colorado Rockies fans who has been desperately hoping for Jamie Moyer to win a game so that he could break the record for oldest pitcher to win a game. I’m far more interested in the Rockies season as a whole and Meyer’s place in it.

Moyer has pitched well enough to already be 3-0 (or at least 2-1). However, poor hitting and errant fielding behind him resulted in less than successful results the first week of the season. Tonight, the Rockies finally came together against the San Diego Padres to put together one of the most complete games they have played all year.

The Rockies managed three runs by the fourth inning to give Moyer a nice cushion for the first time while he was still in a game. That was fortunate, too, as Moyer’s excellent pitching (87 pitches over seven innings) was victimized by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki‘s error that extended the seventh inning and ultimately allowed two runs to score (both unearned). Once Moyer had gotten the third out in that inning, he slipped on his jacket in the dugout and retired for the night.

Fans of the Rockies know that no game is truly over until the final out, and tonight was no different. The Rockies managed to add a few insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth off former Rockies reliever Huston Street. I honestly was never so happy to see Street come into a game than when the Rockies had two men on base and Street walked to the mound wearing a Padres uniform. Street was forever shaky for the Rockies in relief, and he showed again tonight why they got rid of him. For the Rockies, adding those two runs made the difference between winning and losing tonight.

That is because current Rockies reliever Rafael Betancourt channeled his inner Huston Street and allowed one run (via home run) and two other men on base before finally striking out the last batter to seal the win for Moyer. Had Betancourt blown that save, he might very well have become the most hated man in Denver (for at least a few days). As it was, it showed how important those two runs in the eighth were in ensuring victory.

By winning tonight, Meyer showed that he is most definitely not the novelty or sideshow that many thought he was when the Rockies brought him to spring training. He’s an integral part of the pitching staff (by far their best starting pitcher right now) and the team needs him to continue pitching well in order to keep up in the NL West. Moyer could easily win ten games or more this year if the Rockies can play for him like they did tonight.

Julie is a lifelong baseball fan living in Denver since 2001. She’s been to several games at Coors Field (including Moyer’s game last week) and is looking forward to a highly unpredictable season in Denver.
