Report: Rockies in talks with Giants’ Cody Ross

The Colorado Rockies are currently in contract talks with outfielder Cody Ross, according to a tweet from Buster Olney of ESPN.

Ross, 31, hit .240/.325/.405 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI for the San Francisco Giants last season. His best season came in 2009 when he hit .270/.321/.469 with 24 home runs and 90 RBI for the Florida Marlins, however the right-handed outfielder has struggled since he was acquired by the Giants in late 2010.

If signed, Ross will join a crowded Colorado outfield with Carlos Gonzalez, Dexter Fowler, and recently signed Michael Cuddyer.

Not much else going on in the MLB planet today.

Credit Dexter Fowler for predicting the return of…

Credit Dexter Fowler for predicting the return of the NBAAs NBA reporters go, it’s hard to beat Yahoo! Sports’ combination of Adrian Wojnarowski and Marc Spears. Unless you’re Dexter Fowler(notes), outfielder for the Colorado Rockies. He managed to beat every NBA reporter on the planet when it came to announcing the end of the NBA lockout.

Reports from standard sources started coming in late Friday night and early Saturday morning that the five-month-old lockout was ending and opening day would be Dec. 25. But if you follow Fowler on Twitter, NBA Christmas really came Wednesday when he told the world:

Word on these streets is the NBA is BACK!!

Just to be clear, Fowler wasn’t just pie-in-the-sky hoping like most NBA fans. He had hard news that was just begging to be confirmed. Jason Heyward(notes) of the Atlanta Braves asked for a clarification:

“@JasonHeyward: word? RT @DFowler24: Word on these streets is the NBA is BACK!!”<-- That's what I'm hearin!

Word? Word. That’s what he’s hearing. And he was right. He’s a regular Carnac, this guy.

Fowler batted .266/.366/.432 for the Rockies in 2011, and at 25 years old offers the promise of more on the baseball field. But if that doesn’t work out, he could always transition into NBA reporting. He must have good sources. (Hmm, Denver … Kiki Vandeweghe? Fat Lever? Blair Ramussen?)

In a previous life, Fowler was recruited by Miami (the U., not the MAC) and by Harvard (the actual Harvard) to play basketball. He was, as the kids say, a baller. Fortunately for us because we love baseball more, he turned down hoops and is playing in the major leagues. But he’ll always have a piece of his heart on the hardwood. And for that, NBA/Rockies fans on Twitter can be grateful.

Giants Vs. Rockies Final Score: Long Ball Hurts…

Read More: Cody Ross (RF – SFG), Madison Bumgarner (P – SFG), Alex White (P – COL), Brandon Belt (1B – SFG), Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants

It wasn’t five home runs this time, but Colorado Rockies pitcher Alex White fell victim once again the long ball. In the 9-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants, White allowed home runs in back-to-back innings. Brandon Belt sent one over the right center wall in the fourth inning for a two-run shot and Cody Ross sent one out of right field for the 3-0 lead.

White (2-2, 8.46 ERA) ran into more trouble in the sixth inning when pitcher Madison Bumgarner doubled in two runs in the sixth. Cody Ross struck again with a single to score Bumgarner. White allowed six runs in 5-2/3 innings before he was relieved. Aaron Cook pitched the seventh inning and allowed three more runs, two on a home run by Chris Stewart.

The Rockies scored their only run in the fifth inning. Wilin Rosario and Thomas Field started the inning with a walk and a single. Alex White singled them over, which was followed by an Eric Young Jr. out. Dexter Fowler then reached on an error by Pablo Sandoval, allowing Rosario to score. Madison Bumgarner allowed that one run on six hits in seven innings, picking up his 12th win.

The Rockies (70-80, 38-38 home) have Drew Pomeranz on the mound Saturday night.

Tulo And Pacheco Lead Rockies Past D-backs

DENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki homered, Seth Smith tripled twice and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the streaking Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 on Tuesday night. Jordan Pacheco and Carlos Gonzalez had two hits each for Colorado, which beat Arizona for just the fifth time in 17 games. Aaron Hill and Justin Upton had two hits each for the Diamondbacks, who had won 12 of their last 13 to take a seven-game lead in the NL West. Arizona led 3-1 and appeared headed to its fourth straight win when the Rockies rallied for seven runs with two outs in the eighth. With Dexter Fowler on first, Mark Ellis singled to left and Carlos Gonzalez knocked in a run with a single to center off reliever David Hernandez (3-3). Tulowitzki followed with his 30th homer to center to make it 5-3. Hernandez gave up a single to Ty Wigginton before Joe Patterson came on, and Smith greeted him with an RBI triple that made it 6-3. After Wilin Rosario walked, Pacheco followed with a run-scoring single. Sam Demel relieved Patterson and hit Kevin Kouzmanoff with a pitch to load the bases and then walked Fowler to make it 8-3. Matt Belisle (10-4) got the win in relief. Colorado’s rally spoiled a solid outing by Arizona starter Josh Collmenter. The right-hander gave up one run on five hits and struck out four in 6 1-3 innings. Arizona broke a 1-all tie in the seventh. Paul Goldschmidt led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Gerardo Parra’s single to left. The Diamondbacks made it 3-1 when Hill scored from third on a throwing error by third baseman Pacheco in the eighth. The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the first when Hill and Upton hit consecutive one-out singles to put runners at the corners and Montero followed with an RBI grounder. The Rockies tied it in the fifth when Smith led off with a triple to center and scored on Pacheco’s grounder to third. Colorado starter Jason Hammel went seven innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and struck out six. NOTES: Hernandez was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Todd Tichenor as he was leaving the field in the eighth. … Rockies 1B Todd Helton didn’t play for the third straight day due to back stiffness. … Rockies OF Ryan Spilborghs (right foot) will likely not play the rest of the season. … The Rockies promoted Pacheco and right-hander Jim Miller from Triple-A Colorado Springs, and brought up catcher Wilin Rosario from Double-A Tulsa before the game. They placed INF Jonathan Herrera (right index finger) on the 60-day DL. … Arizona lefty Joe Saunders will face Rockies righty Kevin Millwood in the series finale Wednesday night.

Rockies Vs. Padres: Colorado Falls On Sunday, 7-2,…

Read More: Mark Ellis (2B – COL), Jeremy Hermida (LF – SDP), Matt Lindstrom (P – COL), Aaron Cook (P – COL), Cameron Maybin (CF – SDP), Dexter Fowler (CF – COL), San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies

The Colorado Rockies failed to complete two trifectas on Sunday afternoon with their 7-2 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Rockies had a chance at a sweep of the Padres, but didn’t. They could have won their third Sunday game in a row, but they didn’t.

It was a pretty close game until the bottom of the eighth inning. Unlike their help in the previous two games, the Rockies’ bullpen didn’t help things. Matt Belisle started the eighth inning by allowing a Jesus Guzman single to right field before leaving. Matt Reynolds came in and struck out Jeremy Hermida, but Cameron Maybin, pinch-running, stole second and took third on a wild pitch.

Matt Lindstrom entered the game at that point and struck out Kyle Blanks, but he intentionally walked Andy Parrino and hit Nick Hundley. Mark Ellis finally made an error in the field and allowed Alberto Gonzalez to reach safely and Cameron Maybin to score. Will Venable then cleared the bases on a triple. Jason Bartlett flied out to end the inning.

A Mark Ellis ground out and a Seth Smith single scored the Rockies’ two runs in the fourth inning. Dexter Fowler led off the inning with his 15th triple of the season. Aaron Cook (3-9, 5.74 ERA) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks. The Padres’ Mat Latos improved to 7-13 with a 3.77 ERA after allowing those two runs in seven innings.

The Rockies (66-74, 31-41 away) host the Diamondbacks on Labor Day.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.
