Rockies ink P Betancourt to extension

The Colorado Rockies have signed pitcher Rafael Betancourt to a one-year contract extension through the 2012 season.

Denver, CO (Sports Network) – The Colorado Rockies have signed pitcher Rafael Betancourt to a one-year contract extension through the 2012 season.

The deal also contains a club option for 2013.

The 35-year-old right-hander was 5-1 with a 3.61 earned-run average in 72 relief outings for the Rockies last season.

He went 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 32 appearances for Colorado after being acquired on July 23, 2009 from Cleveland, where he started his career in 2003.

Betancourt has compiled a 31-24 career record with a 3.22 ERA and 19 saves over his eight season career with the Indians and Rockies.

DENVER — Reliever Rafael Betancourt has become the fifth non-free agent to get a multiyear contract from the Colorado Rockies this off-season.

The right-hander, already was slated to make $3,775,000 this year, will earn $4 million in 2012 under a new contract agreed to with the Rockies. The deal includes a $4.25 mutual option in 2013 with a $250,000 buyout.

The agreement was first reported by ESPN Deportes and is contingent on Betancourt passing a physical when he reports to spring training.

Betancourt, who turns 36 in April, went 5-1 with a 3.61 ERA last season.

He is the latest non-free agent to receive a multiyear contract from the Rockies this off-season, joining star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, slugger Carlos Gonzalez, reliever Matt Lindstrom and starting pitcher Jason Hammel.

Rockies, Betancourt agree to extension

The Colorado Rockies have agreed to a contract extension with relief pitcher Rafael Betancourt.

ESPN.com is reporting that the contract could keep Betancourt in a Rockies uniform through the 2013 season.

Betancourt went 5-1 and 3.61 ERA in 72 appearances in 2010, with 89 strikeouts and only 8 walks in in 62 1/3 innings.
