Matt Macri rose through the minor leagues with many of today’s Colorado Rockies. The infielder hopes to rejoin them this season in Denver. The former Dowling Catholic baseball player agreed to terms this week on a 1-year minor league contract with the Rockies, returning him to the organization that made him a fifth-round pick in 2004. Macri, who declined to disclose the financial terms of the deal, said it did not include an invitation to spring training. “Those were always my initial goals,†Macri said. “Get up and play in Denver and play in Mile High Stadium and be around there.†The chance came after Macri was designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins in August. Macri, a 2001 graduate of Dowling Catholic, guided the Maroons to the Class 4-A state baseball title that season. Macri was drafted by the Rockies out of Notre Dame and was traded to the Twins in 2007. He appeared in 18 games for the Twins in 2008, hitting .324 with one home run in 34 at-bats. The 28-year-old hit .251 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs for Triple-A Rochester last season. Macri said he always will appreciate the opportunity the Twins provided him. “It worked out,†he said. “They got me to the Majors and that’s something I’ll never forget.†Now, he’ll try to make the big leagues with players such as shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and catcher Chris Iannetta, players who Macri already went through the minor league system with. “A lot of guys that I came up with are in Denver right now playing for them,†he said. “There’s a lot of friendly faces that I know around there.†Gotta run!. | Rockies pick up Lindstrom | |
Houston trades him for 2 minor-league pitchers. DENVER — The Colorado Rockies bolstered their bullpen by acquiring right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom from the Houston Astros on Thursday. In exchange, the Rockies sent minor league pitchers Wes Musick and Jonnathan Aristil to Houston. Lindstrom, up for salary arbitration, has made at least 50 appearances in all four of his years in MLB. He had a team-high 23 saves for Houston in 2010, going 2-5 with a 4.39 ERA. “We were very reluctant to trade Matt,†Astros general manager Ed Wade said. “But with Brandon Lyon, Wilton Lopez and some of our younger arms, we think we have good coverage …†Given his closer experience, Lindstrom could be insurance for the Rockies in case anything happens to Huston Street, who missed the first 69 games in ’10 as he recovered from shoulder inflammation. Lindstrom could also join Rafael Betancourt as a primary setup man. A converted position player, the 24-year-old Aristil spent time at three different levels in the Rockies’ organization last season, winding up at Class AAA Colorado Springs where the right-hander threw two scoreless innings. The left-handed Musick started 23 games at Class-A Asheville, going 8-7 with a 4.05 ERA. “We’ve added two young arms to our prospect depth and we think both Aristil and Musick have a chance to help us down the road,†Wade said.
